Preliminary estimation of geological sequestration potential of CO2 in the Algarve basin – Offshore Portugal

The geological storage of CO2 is gaining momentum as a viable option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach the NetZero goals. This work aimed to produce an initial volumetric estimate of the potential for geological CO2 sequestration in the Algarve basin, in the offshore Portugal, to serve as the cornerstone for further appraisal of this basin. The study focused on two plays, Upper Miocene turbidite systems of Messinian and Tortonian ages, to produce an initial range of potential volumes and select prospects for further development studies.
